Lot Essay

The Martelé records indicate this sample vase was made in 1899, and cost $280. The silversmith spent 65 hours fashioning the vase and the chaser spent 85 hours. Apparently two vases were made with slightly different decoration and one was gilt. This description matches the present lot, as does its original weight of 76 oz.
