Appear to retain thier original flame-stitch needlework seats, and both apprear to retain thier original surface. The label on one seat frame reads: This under-cover was worked by Mary Gardiner of Gardiner's Island. She was born in 1740, the rear rail with label Elizabeth Thompson. The other chair bears a label on the seatframe inscribed Mary G. Thompson; the slip-seat with a label reading This chair-cover was worked by Mary Gardiner of Gardiner's Island. She was born in 1740. Lot Essay

Mary Gardiner was the daughter of John Gardiner, 5th Proprietor of Gardiner's Island, and Elizabeth Mulford. Mary eloped with Rev. Elijah Blague, who was both the minister and teacher on Gardiner's Island. She later married the Rev. Stephen Johnson of Lyme, Connecticut.
