Lot Essay
Born in Bessemer, Alabama, Ron Lokett was an extended member of the Dial family. His father and Thorton Dial, Sr. were both raised by a relative, Sara Dial Lockett. Lockett became interested in painting while in school and was particularly influenced by Thorton Dial, Sr. While working in the family business of manufacturing lawn furniture, he was able to observe Dial's use of found object and their incorporation into his art. Lockett's works are generally allegorical, more closely linked to his own social and political concerns. For related examples see Maresca and Ricco, American Self-Taught (New York, 1993) pp. 128-129.
