Lot Essay

Drawn after 1763 while Zocchi was living in Pisa painting large landscape frescoes in the Palazzo dell'Archivescovado. The Giocco del Ponte was a mock battle between the two factions of the city which took place every three years on the Ponte di Mezzo in Pisa.
This and the following lot were part of an album (dismembered in 1979) commissioned from Zocchi by Sir Horace Mann when he was British Envoy in Florence after 1764.
