Lot Essay

These drawings are among the first made by Cassas in Italy, shortly after his arrival in Rome in August 1779. During his first sojourn in Italy, which lasted until 1783, Cassas made a number of other drawings of Terni and Tivoli, of which a group in black chalk are in an album in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and in Tours (Tours, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louis François Cassas, 1994, nos. 10-16, 18).
