A woman wearing a ruff and bonnet and holding a lozenge-shaped escutcheon

One of a series of drawings all of which show female figures with lozenge-shaped escutcheons held by two long ribbons. Others were in the collection of Sir Robert Witt now at the Courtauld Institute (A. Blunt (ed.), Hand-list of the drawings in the Witt Collection, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London, 1956, p. 120, no. 2821); in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (K.G. Boon, Netherlandish Drawings of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries, The Hague, 1978, no. 505); formerly in the collection of Kurt Meissner, Zurich (Handzeichnungen alter Meister aus Schweizer Privatbesitz, exhib. cat., Kunsthaus Zurich, 1967, no. 135, as Gerrit Pietersz.); and sold Sotheby's, London, 7 July 1966, lot 63 (as Gerrit Pietersz.). Dr Boon firmly rejects the transfer of the group to Gerrit Pietersz., which was based on Kurt Bauch's work on the latter artist.
