Lot Essay
The attribution to Corot was confirmed by Martin Dieterle in a letter dated 18 November 2004. The drawing will be included in the forthcoming addition to the Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre graphique de Corot currently being prepared by Jill Newhouse and Martin Dieterle.
Martin Dieterle dates the drawing to 1827-28, during Corot's first trip to Italy. Corot left France in September 1825 and travelled through Switzerland. He arrived in Rome in December and stayed there until Spring 1828. During this period he organized trips to the surrounding towns of Civita Castellana, Viterbo, Terni, Narni, Tivoli, Subiaco, Civitella and all the other locations usually frequented by the artists. In the Spring of 1828 he travelled to Naples, Capri and Ischia and shortly afterwards returned to France via Venice, the lakes and Switzerland.
Figure drawings by Corot are rare, especially during the first Italian period. Another, a Neapolitan peasant woman playing the tambourine, is in the Louvre (G. Monnier, Hommage à Corot, exhib. cat., Paris, Orangerie, 1975, no. 135). That drawing can be precisely dated thanks to the sketch of the verso depicting the Bay of Naples.
