A MEISSEN DOCUMENTARY ARMORIAL BOWL FROM THE POPE BENEDICT XIV SERVICE
CIRCA 1749, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK, PRESSNUMMER 3 AND INDISTINCT IMPRESSED NUMERAL TO FOOTRIM
Painted with a view of Dresden across the river Elbe, the foreground with a gentleman and two ladies by a milestone inscribed and dated Dres. den 1741 above an AR monogram, the river with boating figures and barges before a fine bridge, Dresden beyond, within an elaborate gilt ombrierte cartouche with scrolling foliage, diaper panels and edged at the sides with purple and iron-red scrolls, the lower part reserved with an oval purpurmalerei panel with figures before buildings, the reverse with a coat of arms within a grisaille and gilt scrolling escutcheon with crossed palm fronds below and surmounted by a papal tiara against crossed keys, the interior with a Venetian canal scene within a similar cartouche surmounted by a shell, below a gilt border of interlocking foliage and flowerheads, gilt band rim and footrim

Lot Essay

This bowl is part of the service given to Pope Benedict XIV who had paid for the building of a new church on the banks of the Elbe. The church was completed by 1749. The coffee-pot from this service, now in the Ludwig Collection, Germanischesnationalmuseum, Nuremburg, depicts the church still clad in scaffolding.
