Lot Essay

Born in Minnertsga and mayor of Franeker in 1637-9, Mancadan resided in Friesland for his entire career. He is not thought to have started painting until he settled in Leeuwarden in 1645, presumably inspired by the Frisian scenery around the farm he owned at Siegerswoude. Working in this remote setting, Mancadan developed a personal and unmistakable style; his pictures, as here, usually focus on small corners ofbare landscape rendered with a limited palette and highly detailed brushwork.

We are grateful to Marijke de Kinkelder of the RKD for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
