She also delivered the symposium's first paper, entitled "Automatic programming -- definitions," and gave a summary of the proceedings at the end. Over two hundred people attended the symposium, which also featured papers by John Backus, inventor of FORTRAN and Stanley Gill, co-author of the first textbook on computer programming (Wilkes, Wheeler and Gill).
