TWO SIMILAR GEORGE III SILVER CAKE BASKETS
MAKER'S MARK INDISTINCT, LONDON, 1768 AND 1769
Each of oval section with a gadrooned rim, the sides pierced with quatrefoil motifs, engraved with a coat-of-arms and supported on a skirt foot and with an overhead handle - 13¼in. (33.5cm.) long, 48oz.
The arms are those of Sackville, 8th Earl of Thanet, (1733-1786). Lord Thanet was married in 1767 to Mary, sister of John Frederick, 3rd Duke of Dorset. (2)

Lot Essay

The silver collection of the Earls of Thanet are perhaps best known for the substantial service supplied by Paul de Lamerie to Sackville Tufton, 7th Earl of Thanet from 1742 to 1746. That service included a pair of soup tureens, covers and ladles which were sold Christie's London, 5 July 2000, lot 10.
