A SET OF SIX WILLIAM IV SILVER DINNER PLATES
MAKER'S MARK IH, LONDON, 1833
Each of circular section with a leaf and shell decorated border, engraved with two coats-of-arms - 10 3/8in. (26.4cm.) diameter, 142oz.
The arms are those of Grant for Sir Colquhoun Grant K.C.B., G.C.H. (d.1835). This celebrated general started his army career in the 36th Reginent in India and was present at the siege of Seringapatam in 1799. He later led the 72nd Highlanders at the recapture of the Cape of Good Hope and then commanded the 15th Hussars. He served in the Peninsula campaigns and led the 15th, 7th and 2nd Hussars at the Battle of Waterloo. He was awarded the Russian Order of St. Vladimir and the Order of William the Lion of the Netherlands. He inherited the estates of Frampton, co. Dorset in 1833, which passed on his death to his daughter. She had married Richard Brinsley Sheridan, grandson of the playwright, in 1834.
