Lot Essay

The Emile Seurre statue showing Naloleon as "The Little Corporal" was placed atop the Austerlitz Column during the July Monarchy. The cloumn was originally topped by a statue of Napoleon in Roman dress that was removed after the Bourbon restoration in 1814, and replaced with the Fleure De Lys of the Ancien Regime. The Seurre Napoleon was later removed to its current position in Les Invalides and the Austerlitz column was retuned to its original design during the Second Empire when a copy of Caudet's original work by Dumont was placed atop the column.
