Lot Essay

Settle beds had the dual function of providing seating during the day and a bed at night and were common in Irish houses after 1850. Many have several layers of paint but this example is unusual in having only its original paintwork. Also unusual are the weighted iron hanging feet on the front which allow for the bed to sit level on the floor when folded down, the sledge feet keeping the bed above floor level. Settle beds are predominantly large in size for adults and therefore this example made for children is extremely unusual.
