Frances Avery, born in Kitchner, Ontario, studied at the Wickers School of Fine Arts, Detroit, Michigan, and at the Art Students League, New York. Supported by the Works Progress Administration, Avery was a member of the National Association of Women Artists, the New York Society of Women Painters and the National Society of Mural Painters. Avery's work has been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, 1938, 1941 (prize), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1935, and the World's Fair, 1939.
