FAULKNER, William Cuthbert (1897-1962). These 13. New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1931. 8° (210 x 140mm). Title printed in red and black. (Occasional light marginal spotting or marking.) Original red cloth backed grey cloth, spine lettered in silver, top edge silver (cloth lightly spotted, spine a little leant).
FIRST EDITION, NUMBER 15 OF 299 COPIES SIGNED BY FAULKNER. These 13 was Faulkner's first collection of short stories, seven of which ('Victory', 'All the Dead Pilots', 'Crevasse', 'A Justice', 'Mistral', 'Divorce in Naples', and 'Carcassonne') were first published here, the remainder having previously been published in magazines. Petersen states that it is 'likely' that the present, limited edition precedes the trade edition, on the basis of the typography; it should also be noted that the printing of the limited edition is dated 'August, 1931' on the limitation leaf, whilst the printing date of the trade edition is given by Petersen as 21 September 1931. Massey 506 ('presumably first printing'); Petersen A9d.
