Lot Essay

This cabinet shares several features with one formerly in the collection of the late Sir Harold Wernher, Bt., G.C.V.O, Luton Hoo and sold Sotheby's, London, 24 May 1995, lot 33. Similarities include the basic form of serpentine base and flat-fronted upper section, similar interior arrangement of the cabinet section and almost identical method of 'secure' fixing clips on the inner corners of the doors. Both cabinets are fitted with a slide with a hinged writing-slope. While the present cabinet was originally fitted with handles on both upper and lower sections, the Wernher cabinet retained its side handles.
