Lot Essay

In 1946 Piper was commissioned to design the sets for his first opera at Glyndebourne, The Rape of Lucretia. The opera was produced by Eric Crozier, and it was also the beginning of the artist's long association with Benjamin Britten. The drawings for this opera made up an exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in October of the same year.
