PARR, Samuel (1747-1825) -- Henry George BOHN (1796-1884). Bibliotheca Parriana. A Catalogue of the Library of the late Reverend and Learned Samuel Parr. London: C. Richards for John Bohn and Joseph Mawman, 1827.

8o (215 x 128 mm). Engraved portrait by Skelton after de Longaste. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt (joints weak, a bit rubbed). Provenance: John Russell, Sixth Duke of Bedford (1766-1839, bookplate).

Sale catalogue of the library of the educationalist Dr. Parr, called in his time "The Whig Dr. Johnson." Much has been written about Parr's abrasive manner and constant pipe smoking, although he was a fine Latinist and an esteemed literary scholar. H.G. Bohn identifies himself as the compiler in his 1869 edition of Lowndes; according to him, this is one of not more than six copies in which pp. 55 & 486 were replaced by cancels on the instructions of Parr's executors. The copy at the Grolier Club is inscribed by H.G. Bohn: "40 copies only printed, none for sale." Bohn was unsuccessful in their attempt to sell the collection en bloc, and it was sold at auction in 1828.
