HOLMES, John (1758-ca 1841) -- A Descriptive Catalogue of Books, in the Library of John Holmes, F.S.A., with notices of authors and printers. Norwich: Matchett, Stevenson, and Matchett, 1828-1840.

6 volumes, including 2 supplements, 8o (226 x 140 mm). Lithographed frontispiece and portrait of Holmes. Vols. 1-4 in original boards, uncut, the 2 supplements in original wrappers (worn, vol. 1 rebacked, vol. 3 spine perished). Provenance: William Taylor, Norwich (inscription in vol. 1: "From the Author's Friend, S.W.S."); Mrs. Seth Stevenson (presentation inscription from the author in vol. 3).

The privately printed catalogue, spread over twelve years, of the extensive library of a Norfolk country gentleman, of East Redford, "one of the younger Sons of a worthy and highly respected Clergyman of the Church of England, (who)... in early life had neither the thought nor the means of indulging his fancy for the acquisition of a Library. It was very late in life, therefore, before he possessed any Volumes that might be called a collection..." (from the preface to vol. I). Vol. IV has a general index. He published vol. I when he was seventy, and the last supplement when he was eighty-two. In October, 1841, the bulk of the library was sold at Sotheby's after his death, and the remainder the following year. It is rarely found complete. (6)
