HALLÉE, Étienne, Seigneur De La Motte-Saint-Jean (1664-1741) -- Livres et estampes du cabinet de M. Hallée, chevalier de l'Ordre de S. Michel, et secrétaire du Roy. Paris: Privately Printed [by the Imprimerie Royale?], 1730.
Two parts in one volume, 8o (203 x 132 mm). Contemporary calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece, in the manner of Padeloup le Jeune, edges stained red (few small splits along joints). Provenance: Grolier Club (bookplate, duplicate stamp).
Apparently the second French privately printed catalogue for the personal use of the collector and his friends. "In France the first personal catalogue seems to be that ... of one Hallée in 1730. I have no information about him..." (Pollard & Ehrman, p. 76, who only record a single copy. They later discovered that the Comte de Toulouse's Rambouillet catalogue of 1726 was earlier and acknowledged this on the errata slip). The first part lists, according to the bibliographical system set out in the preliminary pages, 1,530 numbered works, though the components of the "Collections" (Ad usum Delphini, Elzevirs, &c.) remained unnumbered, as most of them, but not all, are included and numbered under the various headings. Part II is unnumbered, and repeats some of the books listed in Part I under appropriate subject headings. The collection was sold by auction after Hallée's death in 1742.
