ESSLING, François-Victor Massena, Duc De Rivoli, Prince d' (1799-1863) -- Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de M. le P. D'E***. Paris: Silvestre, 25 April 1839.
8o (216 x 134 mm). Late 19th-century brown half morocco, t.e.g., others uncut (a bit rubbed).
Prince d'Essling was the son of André Massena, the greatest of Napoleon's marshals, and the father of Victor, the collector and bibliographer of early Venetian illustrated books. He had already sold portions of his library in 1830 and 1836. In his preface, Silvestre highlights several sections of the sale, those on ornithology, the romances of chivalry and "gothiques," an "almost complete" collection on conchology, and on voyages, the most extensive section of the catalogue.
