BRAUN, David (1664-1737) -- De Scriptorum Poloniae et Prussiae historicorum, politicorum & J[uris] C[onsul]torum typis impressorum ac Manuscriptorum in Bibliotheca collectorum virtutibus et vitiis, catalogus et judicium. Coloniae [i.e. Berlin]: [printed for David Braun by George Runge], 1723.
4o (202 x 164 mm). Title in black and red, some fine calligraphic woodcut headpieces. (C1 bound before c1, Ff slightly misbound.) 19th-century half vellum. Provenance: Russian library stamp and note dated 1886.
The catalogue of Braun's library, compiled and extensively furnished with critical evaluations of the books by himself, is tantamount to the first bibliography of both Poland and of Prussia, with 300 and 250 works respectively. Braun had it privately printed by the only printing press then extant in Berlin, a city which, though printing had sporadically started there as early as 1540, hardly ever had more than one press at a time until the end of the seventeenth century, with the result that all books printed there before that date are rare. The Collection was acquired by the Royal Library of Dresden in 1734.
