HAMMER-PURGSTALL, Josef Freiherr von (1774-1856) -- Verzeichniss der hinterlassenen werthvollen Bibliothek weiland des Herrn Josef Freiherrn v. Hammer-Purgstall. Vienna: Jakob Bader, 16 December 1857.
8o (191 x 122 mm). Modern boards, original wrappers.
Auction catalogue of the library of the outstanding orientalist of his time, whose translation of the "Divan" by Hafiz had so profound an influence on Goethe's West-östlicher Divan. The sale never took place as the library was purchased en bloc by the University of Leipzig (with the exception of the oriental manuscripts, which went to the Vienna Hofbibliothek). The collection was particularly rich in scholarly works on the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire and Arabia, with particular emphasis on Persian literature; Hammer-Purgstall is credited with generating considerable scholarly interest in these subjects in nineteenth century Germany. Folter 299.
