Provenance: William Gott of Wyther, Yorkshire (1797-1863, collector of Shakespeare quartos and folios and other English literature), bookplate, his note on binder and date at the end of vol. 1, by inheritance to his son -- Dr. John Gott (1830-1906, Bishop of Truro), the library offered by Sotheran's in their catalogue Bibliotheca pretiosa (1907).

GRANGERIZED SET, in a fine characteristic binding by Lewis, of the LARGE-PAPER ISSUE, LIMITED TO 100 COPIES, of the FIRST EDITION of Dibdin's bibliophilic travel book, which has been much maligned but actually contains valuable information on the state of institutional and private libraries during the Bourbon Restoration, descriptions of bookshops and interviews with bibliographers ("Vous voilá, Mons. Brunet, bien occupé!!" "Oui, Monsieur, cela me fait autant de plaisir que de peine"). Charles Lewis was the most famous English binder at this time, much praised by Dibdin in this work and considered the undisputed master by Thouvenin, Brunet and Crapelet, as well as by French amateurs (see next lot).
