Numerous wood-engraved text illustrations; 83 plates (mostly engraved, a few woodcut, lithographic, colored, or tinted) by Hutin Romney, Finden, Freeman, Fry and others, mostly after George Lewis (two after Coeuré); 62 engraved vignettes on India paper by Lewis, Pye, Mitan, Freebairn, Agar and others; 60 ETCHED PLATES BY GEORGE LEWIS from his Series of groups of the people of France and Germany 1823 (printed on India paper and limited to the LARGE-PAPER ISSUE). EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with etched portrait of Dibdin by Henry Meyer after Henry Edridge (proof impression dated 1816), one of 75 impressions pulled of the author's mezzotint portrait by Hodgetts after Phillips (loosely inserted), an EXCEEDINGLY RARE PROOF IMPRESSION of J. Thompson's engraved portrait of Diane de Poitiers (loosely inserted), the engraved view on India paper of the Praeter in Vienna by G. Corbould after Lewis; 18 PROOF IMPRESSIONS before letters of the main series of plates; 17 PROOF IMPRESSIONS of the vignettes; 42 plates from other works, mostly etched views from Captain Batty's German Scenery 1823. BOUND BY CHARLES LEWIS FOR WILLIAM GOTT, London 1830: gold-tooled hard-grain blue morocco, triple fillets with arabesque cornerpieces on sides, quintuple fillets in compartments of spines, floral roll on bands, fillets and small rosettes on turn-ins, brick-red endpapers, gilt-edges, (binding unsigned, small scar to front cover of vol. 4). Provenance: William Gott of Wyther, Yorkshire (1797-1863, collector of Shakespeare quartos and folios and other English literature), bookplate, his note on binder and date at the end of vol. 1, by inheritance to his son -- Dr. John Gott (1830-1906, Bishop of Truro), the library offered by Sotheran's in their catalogue Bibliotheca pretiosa (1907).
GRANGERIZED SET, in a fine characteristic binding by Lewis, of the LARGE-PAPER ISSUE, LIMITED TO 100 COPIES, of the FIRST EDITION of Dibdin's bibliophilic travel book, which has been much maligned but actually contains valuable information on the state of institutional and private libraries during the Bourbon Restoration, descriptions of bookshops and interviews with bibliographers ("Vous voilá, Mons. Brunet, bien occupé!!" "Oui, Monsieur, cela me fait autant de plaisir que de peine"). Charles Lewis was the most famous English binder at this time, much praised by Dibdin in this work and considered the undisputed master by Thouvenin, Brunet and Crapelet, as well as by French amateurs (see next lot).
