PICHON, baron Jérôme (1812-96). Bibliophiles et relieurs. Edited by Georges Vicaire. Paris: George Vilette at Vendôme for Librairie Henri Leclerc, 1907.

4o (230 x 175 mm). BOUND BY LéON GRUEL: contemporary gold-tooled crushed olive morocco, borders and corner ornament on sides, as well as the compartments of the spine, decorated with leafy sprays, central oval on front cover containing the title, on back cover the imprint, also lettered on spine, gilt fillets and small sprays on turn-ins, signed on lower turn-in of front cover, top edges gilt, original wrappers preserved, (color of spine very slightly faded).

Extract from the Bulletin du Bibliophile, printed on large-paper and limited to 80 copies. A fine traditional binding by Léon Gruel, who joined his half-brother Jean Engelmann in 1875 to run his late father's shop until 1923. Gruel was the author of a still useful history of bookbinding, Manuel historique et bibliographique de l'amateur des reliures (2 vols., 1887-1905), extensively illustrated from his own collection (see lot 111). Considering his interest in the subject of the late Baron Pichon's essay, it is quite possible that Gruel bound it for himself. BBB Wittockiana 49.
