BONET, Paul (1889-1971) -- Georges BLAIZOT (expert). Bibliothèque Paul Bonet. Paris: Tournon et Cie for Ader and Picard, commissaires-priseurs, 22-23 April 1970.

4o (269 x 190 mm). Color frontispiece, black-and-white plates, text illustrations.

ONE OF PAUL BONET'S LAST BINDINGS, executed for Professor Jacques Millot and dated 1971: black boxcalf, decorated with crimson, orange, ochre, grey and light-blue inlays to an all-over design of vertical waves extending across both covers and the spine, title lettered in gilt on spine, dark-brown suede doublures and endleaves, gilt edges, original wrappers preserved. Chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Jacques Millot (inscribed to him by Bonet on half-title, sale Drouot, 15 June 1991).

NO. V OF X COPIES ON VéLIN FORT PAPER, containing a facsimile of Max Jacob's final letter to Bonet (limitation statement on half-title written and initialled by the artist). PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed: "à Monsieur le Professeur Jacques Millot, qui, avec discrétion, m'a donné maintes preuves d'amitié. La mienne rendue, Paul Bonet", and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED for Millot with 29 photographs of Bonet bindings, and two sale reports from the Gazette de l'Hôtel Drouot.

Bonet was not only a great binding designer, but also an important bibliophile, who knew most of the surrealists and leading French writers. Some of his finest bindings he designed for himself, and the sale of his collection in 1970 caused more than a ripple. Professor Millot regularly commissioned bindings from Bonet over many decades. Copy no. IV was apparently bound to the same design some months earlier, but no. V is apparently not mentioned in Bonet's Carnets.
