BOUND BY PIERRE-LUCIEN MARTIN FOR JACQUES MILLOT, Paris 1956: maroon morocco, front cover with large suede panel in burgundy and silver-grey inlaid with maroon and silver-grey morocco forming the cyphers of the Société de la Reliure Originale, plain burgundy suede panel in the back cover, smooth spine with gilt longitudinal lettering, signed and dated on turn-ins, gilt edges, original wrappers preserved (the Society's cypher reproduced on front wrapper). Provenance: Professor Jacques Millot, inscribed to him and signed by Martin at the beginning of the section devoted to the binder in the catalogue (p. 84): "A Monsieur le Professeur Millot, en souvenir de cette première Exposition et de debuts qu'il voulut bien encourager avec indulgence, en témoignage de mes sentiments reconnaissants. Janvier 1954." With publicity release, invitation to the exhibition opening and the large fold-out original poster inserted.
A landmark exhibition of Romantic and contemporary bookbindings. It was the first exhibition in which Martin (1913-85) was invited to show his work by the Bibliothèque nationale and the Société de la Reliure Originale, to which he had recently been elected a member.
