PAINE, James (1725-1789). Plans, Elevations, and Sections of Noblemen and Gentlemen's Houses ... executed in the Counties of Derby, Durham, Middlesex, Northumberland, Nottingham, and York, London: Printed for the Author, 1767-83. 2 volumes in one, 2° (563 x 367mm). 175 plates on 123 sheets, 54 double-page, some folding, engraved by Miller, Patton, White and others, list of subscribers (occasional light spotting and offsetting, light browning in the text). Contemporary russia, single gilt fillet round sides (rebacked). Provenance: Royal duplicate release stamp, dated 1837, on title-verso (according to a pencilled note on an endpaper, this copy was presented to George III by the author and sold by William IV's executors one month after his funeral).

As Fowler observes, 'Paine was one of the most skilful house planners of his period' and the publication of part 2 in 1783 together with the republication of part 1 marked the swansong at the end of his extremely successful career.
