Kitae [forging pattern]: itame with some mokume, jinie
Hamon [tempering pattern]: ko-midare in suguha of nie
Boshi [tip]: ko-maru boshi
Horimono [carvings]: vajra, ken on omote, Sanskrit on ura
Nakago [tang]: 2 holes, suriage
Habaki [collar]: double, gilt copper
In Shirasaya [plain wood scabbard] with inscription by Homma Junji (Kunzan), ordered by Aoyama Kokichi, dated Showa 29 (1954)
Nagasa [length from tip to beginning of tang]: 72.4 cm.
Sori [curvature]: 1.4 cm.
Motohaba [width at start of tempered edge]: 2.9 cm.
Sakihaba [width before tip]: 2.1 cm.

Lot Essay

The blade is by the second of a number of generations of smiths, starting with the first who was active in Etchu during the late Nanbokucho period, a contemporary or brother of Kunifusa. The last was a shinto smith working around the 1680s.
