Lot Essay

Twelve of the fifty-four chapters of the Tale of Genji are illustrated in these paintings, which were once pasted in an album or on a folding screen. The first of the paintings, illustrated above, is Chapter 5 (Waka Murasaki/Lavender), showing Genji spying on the ten-year-old Murasaki. The other chapters include Chapter 12 (Suma), Chapter 13 (Akashi), Chapter 15 (Yomogiu/The Wormwood Patch), Chapter 18 (Matsukaze/The Wind in the Pines), Chapter 29 (Nowaki The Typhoon), Chapter 34 (Wakana I/New Herbs: Part One), Chapter 39 (Yugiri), Chapter 46 (Shiigamoto/Beneath the Oak), Chapter 49 (Yadorigi/The Ivy), and Chapter 51 (Ukifune/A Boat Upon the Waters).
