Lot Essay

Yutei is the son of Ishida Yutei Morinao (1721-1786) who was the teacher of Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795). He painted sliding doors (fusuma) for the newly renovated imperial palace in Kyoto, and he would have seen this procession. When the palace burned in Tenmei 8 (1788), Emperor Kokaku moved to Seigoin Temple. The palace was rebuilt in 1790.
