Lot Essay

The Four Accomplishments of the cultivated gentleman are music (qin playing), the game of go, calligraphy and painting. These activities have been associated with the Chinese gentleman-scholar since early times.

Toun was the son of the metalworker Goto Mitsuyori. He was the pupil of Kano Tan'yu, who adopted him. Toun established a branch of the Kano family at Surugadai and received the title Hogen in 1691.
