Baldridge was raised in Chicago and had a successful career as an illustrator and typographer. He spent several months in China, Korea and Japan in 1919 and 1920, and returned again in 1924. In 1925, during a six-week layover in Japan on the way home, he met the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, who issued some of Baldridge's watercolors of Beijing scenes as woodblock prints.
