Lot Essay

Chikuho is one of the leading bamboo masters of the first half of the 20th century. He lived in Osaka and enjoyed the patronage of many connoisseurs of basket art, including the imperial household. His son, Chikuho II, has been designated a "living national treasure."

This basket, displaying Maeda's classic contrast between tight plaits of bamboo and free-form handle, is used to hold arrangements of seasonal fruits.
