including two armchairs, each with adzed panelled back above leather padded seat, on square chamfered legs joined by stretchers, each with carved Gnome signature

Thomas Whitaker, an early associate of Robert "Mouseman" Thompson, was involved primarily on ecclesiastical interior work before establishing his own cabinet-making business in the late 1940's. Based in Whitby, Yorkshire, Whitaker rarely ever employed more than two or three cabinet makers until the close of the company in 1994 (6)
