FIRST EDITION. "The expedition was of New England land forces under Pepperell in 1745, against Louisbourg; the fortress fell, but was restored to France under the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen), which ended the War of the Austrian Sucession in Europe. Prepared at the behest of the Massachusetts colonial government, under the direction of Gov. William Shirley at the time of his visit to Louisbourg, Aug.-Oct. 1745, it was, in Shirley's words, 'the joint account of the commanding officers of the three colonies, and settled by the agreement of 'em all,' attested by signatures of Pepperell and four others. This is apparently the first printed edition of the account, published in Apr. 1746. It was next issued as an appendix to A Letter from William Shirley ... to ... the Duke of Newcastle, London, 1746" (Waldon, p.305). TPL notes: "The journal, preceded by the author's plea for 'handsome' recompense for leading the expedition occupies pp.3-25; an account of the French fishing industry, pp.27-40." Apparently he was successful in his plea. Not in Lande, Bell, Vlach, Gagnon, or Can. Arch. Alden & Landis 746/4; Dionne II, 455; Howes P-221; Sabin 6084; Staton & Tremaine/TPL 199.
