JEFFERSON, Thomas (1743-1826), President. Return of the Whole Number of Persons within the Several Districts of the United States, According to "An Act Providing for the Enumeration of the Inhabitants of the Unites States"... Philadelphia: Childs & Swaine, 1791.
8vo (7 5/8 x 4¾ in.), pages 53 and 54 (returns for Kentucky and South Carolina) printed on rectos of separate leaves to be pasted to blanks left for that purpose. Stabbed and sewn in original marbled paper wrappers, minor ink spotting to upper cover, two corners slightly dog-eared, otherwise in fine condition. A FINE, WIDE-MARGINED, COMPLETELY UNCROPPED COPY. Burgundy half morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST UNITED STATES CENSUS, evidently printed in a very small edition for distribution by the Secretary of State, at whose urging the enumeration was originally undertaken. BOLDLY SIGNED BY SECRETARY OF STATE THOMAS JEFFERSON ("Th:Jefferson") in ink on page 56, as certification of the accuracy of the returns. AAS, A Society's Chief Joys 43; Evans 23916; Howes R220; Not in Streeter. RARE, especially when signed by Jefferson. Only one other signed copy has appeared at auction since 1975 (the Park copy, with scattered cropping, at Sotheby's, 20 November 2000, lot 360, $47,500).
Provenance:
1. Theodore Sedgwick (1746-1813), signature on front flyleaf. Sedgwick, a lifelong Federalist, served in Congress 1785-1788, was a delegate to the Massachusetts Convention to ratify the Constitution, served in Congress 1790-1801 and was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Court.
2. Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), American scholar, professor of the history of art at Harvard (1875-1898), inscriptions on front flyleaves and tipped in ALS to Mr. Scudder, 2 November 1895.
3. Purchased by the grandfather of the present owner from Thomas F. Madigan in the 1930s.
