Engraved title (torn and partially laid down, and pasted over a portion of text on verso), 120 engraved plates (lacks portrait, plate 49 in first part misprinted and trimmed at outer margin, title and first leaf loose, some light marginal worming at beginning and end, a few plates with marginal ink staining). 19th-century calf (lacks backstrip, some wear to edges).
FIRST EDITION, early issue with the spelling of "Venalt" in the second line of the second compartment, but with the addition of "Cum Gratia et Privilegio..." against the design. "Sweert was a Dutch florist who was at one time prefect of gardens for Emperor Rudolf II. The work is a picture book of plants which served as an unpriced catalogue of plants and bulbs for sale at the author's shop at the Frankfurt Fair and afterwards in Amsterdam" (Cleveland Collections). The plates depicting some 560 plants and flowers, are mostly copied from the de Bry florilegium (itself largely based on Vallet). The work is notable for the many fine plates of tulip varieties. It was one of the most popular of the 17th-century florilegia and went through five subsequent editions. Cleveland Collections 157; Hunt 196; Oak Spring Flora 9; Nissen BBI 1920.
