Lot Essay

The unusual model number is not recorded at the EMI Music Archives, and is displayed on a plaque at the back of the case rather than on the motor board. A similar number has been seen on a Model 104, unusually fitted with a lid lock; this suggests that 'M.P.'numbers were used for special runs of non-standard machines. In the present case, the non-standard feature appears to have been the original electric motor, which from a metal plaque also on the back of the case was for D.C. current only. The standard electric option (itself rarely found) was a universal motor, suitable for D.C. or A.C. supplies. The motor now fitted is a disc induction motor, as fitted to HMV and Marconi radiograms in the 1930s. This was probably fitted when the original owner moved house, or the local supply was updated, in the 1930s.
