Lot Essay

The interior of the box has roundels of Romulus and Remus and another of a cat, the later the meaning of his own surname in Italian.
Gatti studied in both Rome and Florence before establishing his workshop in Faenza in the 1870's. Due to ill-health he stopped working in 1881. He was awarded for his exhibits at the international exhibitions of the period: a diplome d'honneur at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle; at the Internationale Ausstellung in Vienna in 1873; and a gold medal at the Universelle, Paris in 1878.
