Lot Essay

Born in Vienna in 1853, Franz Xavier Simm studied at the famed Academy in his home town. He worked for a while in the studio of Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880) and then spent two years under the tutelage of Edouard von Engerth (1818-1892). Like many German artists of his generation, he traveled to Rome and spent five years studying the art of the Italian masters before finally settling in Munich.
