Lot Essay

Adrien-Jean-Maximilien Vachette (1753-1839) was one of the most well-known and prolific Parisian goldsmiths producing gold boxes in a variety of styles and materials.

Jean-Jacques de Gault worked as a porcelain painter at Sèvres and received numerous important commissions including a jewel cabinet for Marie Antoinette, now at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

A similar snuff box marked by Vachette with grisaille panels painted by de Gault is illustrated in Charles Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes, Los Angeles, 1991, pp. 108-109. Another example was sold at Christie's, London, 6 November 2001, lot 185.
