Lot Essay

A San Francisco native, Mary Herrick Ross entered the San Francisco School of Design in 1874 and was the first pupil to enroll. During her career, she exhibited at the Columbian Exposition, Chicago in 1893, the Mark Hopkins Institute and Golden Gate Park Museum, among others. She was a very talented artist, but was not motivated to sell her work, preferring to live a life of leisure. Consequently her works are very rare.
