Lot Essay

Painted just two years after Joseph Kleitsch arrived in Southern California from Chicago, Mission Canyon is an enchanting view of a tree-filled canyon bathed in bright winter sun.

Dr. Patricia Trenton writes, "In December 1922, Kleitsch set up his easel in the back canyon country of Northern San Diego County to depict Mission Canyon with its tangled branches of gnarled gray sycamores 'lifting their burden of golden leaves above a river-bottom green with winter.'" (P. Trenton, Joseph Kleitsch: A Kaleidoscope of Color, The Irvine Museum, Irvine, California, 2005-6)
