JOHAN HAGEMEYER (1884-1962)
This arresting portrait of Salvador Dali is typical of Hagemeyer's mature style. Neutral or dark backgrounds, subdued natural light and serious poses create an intangible mood from which the powerful personalities of his sitters emerge.

Lot Essay

The original 4 x 5in. negative is in the Johan Hagemeyer Photograph Collection, Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley. No print from this negative exists in the collection. There are 17 negatives from this sitting 27 May 1944.

It appears that Hagemeyer must have later reused this mount for this image; the mismatched notations on the reverse of the mount refer to an earlier print.
