Lot Essay

According to legend, the discovery of the tomb of Saint James the Greater occurred at the high watermark of the Moorish occupation of Spain. The discovery of this tomb was credited with transforming the fortunes of the Spanish against the Moors. On the eve of the Battle of Clavijo in 844, King Ramirez of Castille dreamt that Saint James would lead the path to victory. The following day, the Saint appeared to fight beside the Christian armies, inspiring in them an overwhelming and much celebrated victory.
