Tavernier spent 30 years travelling in the East as a merchant. Between 1638 and 1668 he made six voyages from Turkey to Persia, India, the East Indies and Japan. By indicating the safe routes he did much to open up trade between West and East. This was recognised on his return to France when he was granted a patent of nobility as the Baron d'Aubonne. Wing T256A.
