Lot Essay

A paint analysis reveals that the present decoration is based on a zinc white, a twentienth century pigment. However, traces of the original eighteenth century blue decoration do survive under the later paint on the sides. The cream paint between the drawers, as well as the pale Prussian blue of the lower legs, are also part of the original scheme.
