Lot Essay

The pier glass frame is japanned in imitation of Chinese lacquer in the manner described in Messrs Stalker and Parker's Treatise on Japanning, 1688. This mirror is designed for the tall narrow window piers of the late 17th century, and with its tiered panels of glass relates to a ten foot mirror supplied in 1711 for Burley-on-the-Hill, Nottinghamshire (P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1924, pp. 216-217).
